So much for the typhoon I thought to myself wiping my beaded face every two minutes for the second day running. I was teaching the year 2s for Motor Skills. "Pirates" turns out to be a very popular game. It consists of jumping from island to island (hoop to hoop) and walking the plank (court lines in between the hoops) while the pirates try to catch you out by throwing canon balls (bean bags) onto the island you are on. Endless amusement and happy children are the result (apart from those who desperately wanted to be a pirate and I could only pick two at a time.) After a rather inpromtu code brown situation with one of the children last week, I am pleased to report no poo stories this week. So, the teaching is going well, the weather is unbearably hot but the silver lining to this cloudless sky is that I am burning calories through sweating!! And to top that, yesterday was none other than payday!
After a surprise apres work beer invitation from Adam, I ran for the 5.10 ferry to meet Kylie, Tanya and Vince. We had a spa booked for 6.30 and we needed to get up to 'the peak'. The peak is a high point of hong kong in more ways than one. the views are incredible even when it isnt a clear day. We had a rather hairy taxi ride up and arrived early so had a look around The Peak Galleria. this is a shopping mall with some bars and restaurants and balconies overlooking the city and the views are stunning. We had an Asahi each (japanese beer) and looked down on the tram below and said it would be good to come back up on the peak tram another day. We had snuck in some 'Lucky Shapes' barbecue flavoured savoury biscuits and we chatted and laughed about nonsense and in no time it was time for our treatment.
Well, we had booked for a 30 minute footspa with Garra Raffa. These are small fish that feed from the dead skin on your feet! It was completely freaky at first. The four of us shared a large pool and dangled our feet in the water. The fish also known as doctor fish, nibble fish or little dermatologists instantly started sucking at our feet and toes. They are dark in colour and they get very close together so they make the apparence of sea weed ore even hair as they shimmy around. The sensation was very strange and it tickled a bit for a while. Just as we were getting used to it, we were told that our time was up. We asked about the fish and whether they were fed other food and they are. They are given normal fish food for nutrition and apparently eating dry foot skin is just a hobby, something they do for fun. However, they get a lot of visitors just coming to look at them and we were told that the fish get quite depressed if people don't put their feet in the water.
For some time after our treatment it still felt like the little suckers were still attached! one or two had got a little over enthusiastic and drawn blood on my big toe.
We decided to take the MTR to Central and go to Jo's Cafe where we would be able to get a reasonably priced steak. By the time they came up we were absolutely starving. Kylie's, Tanya's and Vince's came out first and I was left wiating for a short while. I encouraged everyone to tuck in. Five minutes later the waitress came and said to me "your burger will be ready in a minute" we all looked a bit confused as I had ordered a surloin. Vincent's fork laden with steak hovered in front of his open mouth as he realised that he was eating my meal and it was him who had ordered the burger! We swapped plates and Vince gave me some consolatory chips and all was well.
We left Jo's cafe on deciding we were in need of dessert. Tan and Vince took us to a Napalese restaurant in Staunton Street for a spicy yogurt and fresh fruit platter. Completely full and tired from an immensely long day we called it a night and went home.
It's netball trials tonight and I've been carbo-loading, stretching and hydrating all day. Bring it on!!
God bless x
